After showing intense readiness, we have decided to potty train Axel.  Here is my situation.

He carries potty around the house saying "poopy" and "potty".  He wants to put his own pants off and on.  He has an extensive vocabulary and is aware when he is "going" in his pants.

This all lead me to believe that he was ready to go on the potty.  What am I, nuts?

Starting on Monday, I committed to poop, pee and a little potty purchased from once-upon-a-child.  I know millions of babies and mommies are going through this very same process, but really...how isolated can you get?  I haven't left the house in 3 days, and I have seen few signs of improvement.

After much consideration we are using the complete nudity method, ditching the diapers entirely (except during sleepy time) and using a disappointed face when pee hits the floor.

Monday: 1 poop on potty, 1 pee on potty, rest were on the floor
Tuesday: 2 poops on potty, 4 pees on potty, rest were on the floor
Wednesday: so far, 2 pees on the potty, several pees on the floor.

Not sure if I should be encouraged with a 100% success rate for poopy?  I'm grasping for any signs of encouragement.

So, in my head, I'm saying "just quit", try again later.  In my heart, I know he can do it.  HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE to get to the point where you are having more than a 50% overall success rate?  I am pretty much banking on a week of pure torture and some improvement after that?

Hi,

My potty training tips. Get so big boy undies, ones he picks out (Ben, was Thomas the Train, Tim was Bob the Builder).

Put them on, Tell him he doesn't want to get them icky, or wet... Might help. It took a long time. We used pull-ups because that's what daycare said we had to do. I think just going to undies and cleaning them up is easier.

Little Boys take forever to potty train! (I know, I just spent all summer potty training my little guy). Be patient and don't give up. I don't think that there's any magic proceedure or plan that works, but I don't care for the whole pull ups thing (their just diapers!) unless we are going somewhere.

Don't hole up in the house. As much as I dislike pull ups, they are great for trips to the grocery store and library.

Also, bribe him. A little tootsie roll for dry underwear is a great motivator.

Well my little boy is 2 years and 2 months, and shows basically no readiness signs at all...so we are not going down that bridge just yet...but here is the advice everyone in the bejesus seems to be giving me...

My next door neighbor says that when you live in our warm climate and in the middle of nowhere you should let your boy child run buck naked outside for a solid two weeks and since they can see the "stream" and "poop" they will learn and understand....my interpretation of this is how in the heck do you keep your child from being sunburnt, oh and do you clean them off with a hose also????

A girlfriend of two boys told me not to even start until he turns 3. I didn't care for this advice either. She started pull-ups at 2.5 and used them for 1/2 year before even starting to potty train...this seems expensive.

The last bit of advice from my mother and mother-in-law is just to stick with it and not get too upset when they make mistakes.

Oh I also heard a good reward is one m&m everytime they are successful on the potty...this works especially well when the child doesn't normally get candy.

That is all I've got....Good Luck! Make sure to keep us up to date on how it goes...maybe I will learn some magic trick when it is my turn to train my little one!!!

Letting your toddler pee in a public parking lot (much to the disgrace of passerby's) is a much better idea than risking pee in the carseat. Those things are about impossible to disassemble, wash and reassemble!

Go get 'em, Axel!

I have no idea, but I heard blue food coloring does wonders in the potty. Apparently it is fun for little boys to turn the potty green! :) Good Luck!
