what i've been reading...the short list 01/20/2011
You know you're a stay at home mom when your "to read" list can seem overwhelming. You strategize a way to pack in your "words per day," to keep your mind fresh, to check books off your "life reading list" and to most importantly feel connected with the world. I have really scored big lately on the book front (meaning everything I pick up feels like gold to the last page); reading both "trendy" and of course, my favorite, non-fiction. Here are a few I recommend for 2011. ...nothing like the classics. A haunting tale of life and death. Follow this up with... If you're not in the mood to get the creeps, but are slightly curious as to the inner workings of circus life, I recommend... My personal favorite, non-fiction, read by me in 2010...(Jeannette's other best-seller "Glass Castle" is wonderful as well)... ...and because I have re-discovered my LOVE of 10th grade writing exercises, this book has given me something to write about...not that its going anywhere...literally, Ms. Goldberg pushes your envelope with mind exercises! There you have it, my last couple months worth of reading. I've squeezed in the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" series, along with "Great Expectations" and a few others that weren't as remarkable. Currently on my Nook is "A New Earth," by Eckhart Tolle. I wasn't quite ready for it when Oprah jumped on the band-wagon a few years ago, but an older and wiser me is ready to slow down for a soul-searching (rather ego abolishing) read. ![]() While shamelessly shopping at Walmart for the Poly-Fill stuffing I regularly use, I happen to come across one of the most disturbing pieces of merchandise. For just $5 (which is about the amount of change found under the car seats of a pervert) you can purchase something to lure children to your car. Is the old "hey kid, would you like some candy" not working anymore? Is it necessary to roll out the black and orange carpet and entice children with banners, ghosts and the "6ft of hanging decoration"? I really can't say this enough...ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I was so shocked to see this piece of trash that I took a picture (despite the odd looks from the cashier). Really, nothing says Walmart like making an extra 5 while compromising morals. Does the name Jacob Wetterling mean nothing to these people? So, this year, while taking your kids out on the town, it's not so much the treats you need to worry about, it's the man turning tricks from the back of his Prius. two marathons 10/25/2010
This weekend was filled with hard work and great rewards. On Saturday, Jahred ran the first ever Mankato Marathon. With time not on our side this year, he had little free time to train, but came in for a strong finish of 4:00 (four hours even). I was his only spectator and I have to say, that was some boring terrain. Hopefully next year they can spice up the course with some river views...anything other than 26.2 miles of waving corn fields. Really though, it was a great event. Best of all, as Jahred crossed mile 5, I got word of another long awaited marathon being run...the marathon only a mother can compete in! Beautiful Baby Nora was born into our family this weekend and I was lucky enough to meet her on Sunday. I cannot wait to get both Nora and Axel together for some long awaited cousin time! photoshop 09/22/2010
Up until now I have been a believer in raw photography...now I believe in photoshop. Tyler, my brother asked me to take his senior pictures this year...yes, I still have a brother in high school, and I was honored to capture his grown-up self this past weekend. Feeling that the time was right, and I personally have liked myself in fewer photographs lately, Jahred and I invested in youth/software that is cheaper than botox. Because I'm not yet a pro, I am experimenting with different effects to see exactly how far I'm willing to go. I do think I'll keep my photos honest, but playing with the colors is oh so much fun! Because this is Tyler's last "first day of school" I thought I would include Axels first "first day of school." A big year for both of them. Axels first day of pre-school, only the red eyes were removed. Andy (the middle brother in our family) turns 24, Axel decorated two cakes with candles. Some color work was done on this photo. Tyler's senior pic. Selective coloring on this photo. This could get addicting! In Print 08/20/2010
![]() I'm actually speechless when it comes to a major project that I've just completed. Having mentioned to many people that my grandfather was the original scrap-booker, now, publicly in print is a 166 page book of his collection! After a summer of scanning, editing and having a little faith, I have published his collection through Blurb into an 11x13 semi-chronological book (can be found under search: Richard Ruedy). The outcome is stunning, the publishing is beautiful, and the image quality is spot-on! I honestly cannot believe how it looks in print. Wishing he were alive to see his treasured collection preserved forever in the pages of history, I can only imagine the stories he would tell about the articles, pictures and captions he placed on each page. I know it was his hand guiding me on late nights of formating, re-formating and making final editorial decisions. In the end, the book is more or less exactly how he scrap-booked it, and exactly how he would have wanted it. Perhaps the most compelling part of the book is the final third. This part of the book came from a separate album that he held of Memorials. Clipping each obituary from the paper, he honored and preserved every fallen member of the Saint Paul Police, retired, killed in the line of duty, family members of Police Officers, and it was clear how much he cherished each and every friend on the force. Yesterday the book was officially presented to the Saint Paul Police Historical Society. Nana brought us all together at their monthly meeting and she generously donated a copy of the book. What's even more wonderful is that on Blurb, the book will always be available in their bookstore and people can order them for gifts, as memorials and to leave to their own children. For any Minnesota, Saint Paul, Police or history collector, it covers a remarkable time in history. With gratitude for all the circumstances surrounding this year, truly the gift of free-time has been my blessing. Feel free to "preview" the book through the Blurb website. If ever you are interested in creating a similar book, I would be more than happy to throw a few pointers your way! share the Etsy love 05/22/2010
![]() One thing I love more than experiencing Etsy love is to SHARE Etsy love. Last semester, my brother had to come up with a business proposal for a class in school (yes, I still have a brother in High School). He came up with a candle business. He designed, created and sold his product in a "mock market". Although the candle technique has been passed down in our family, his designs and color combinations were quite unique. The "mock market" was a success! He sold loads of candles and the proceeds were donated to charity! Wanting to build on his business experience, he started inquiring about Etsy. A proud moment for me!!! Tyler has worked hard on his product and has put together a stunning little shop! CHECK IT OUT! He calls himself "The Candle Man", a play on words from our favorite childhood movie Willy Wonka. If "the candy man can", hopefully "the candle man" can as well. Enjoy this OOAK "man-made" shop! I had to treat myself this week to a few NEW fabrics. These are straight from the Japanese Textile Design Table (the best in the world), and I like to think I'm the first to get them! Fabulous design, color and texture; the kind of fabric where you measure twice, cut once. Upon their sweet arrival in my mailbox, I completed the 19 Louise Totes already started and listed them in my shop. Today, thanks to Buzz Lightyear, Axel was occupied enough for me to put a few Pleated Wristlets together in the NEW prints! What a treat! Check them out in my shop. I have only a limited amount of this fabric, so treat yourself while they last! ... as a bug in a rug. 04/12/2010
Feeling like I am emerging from a shelter post tornado, we are "settled" in the "Chateau Del Mar". The closing on our property is less then 48 hours away, Axel has only asked twice "please lets go home", and I have managed to tearlessly lead the exodus and final cleaning. Despite our tiny living quarters, I have managed to create a liveable version of the home we loved so much! It also helps that I am very fond of our new town. Not sure if it's the nostalgia of returning to my college stomping grounds, the smell of the food co-op or the library that is more beautiful than a Rocky Mountain lodge, I am happy to be here. Being so "snug", I am learning quickly to think verticle. Every shelf has a purpose and every shelf top is utilized as well. I am secretly pretending that "Chateau Del Mar" is in New York City. I've wanted to live there possibly my whole life and I just consider this practice (or maybe the closest thing I'll get). Never mind the shabby siding, I see our place as a lovely brown stone on the upper east side...our door man just happens to be on an indefinite vacation. Well, more to come when the closing on 810 Baker is actually over and I can officially breathe again. DON'T FORGET ABOUT MY ETSY SALE . . . see previous post. Saint Joseph 02/03/2010
![]() Why didn't I think of it before? This being my 4th house, mommy brain has made me completely forget how I sold the other 3! Advised by a devout Catholic and many critics alike, I buried a statue of Saint Joseph in the yards of each of my "for sale" homes. My previous houses sold within weeks of the burial. A little slow on the saints this time around, last night after sinking into a round of "why me", I got in my car and drove to the nearest Christian book store. They of course had my man, and this time, he came in a kit. Complete with prayer, instructions and a address to send a "tax deductible" donation in the event that it works and I would like to "pass on my fortune". Although there are many myths on how and where to burry this plastic representation of a pious life, I think it's not so important to focus on the particulars. Having faith, placing your worries on a higher power can give you hope, hope changes lives. Last night after dinner, we said the prayer as a family and I buried Joseph in my favorite exterior nook of the house; near the brick and mortar which I believe to be most beautiful. Joseph will await until the house is sold when I will unearth him to carry with us. The strange thing about my experience with Saint Joseph is this: three times I have buried him, three homes I have sold, and each time I tried to dig him up, I couldn't find him?! Ashes to ashes? By no coincidence I'm sure, I received a call first thing this morning that tomorrow there will be a showing! This is your new blog post. Perhaps you're shocked with the new look around here...just learning a bit of html and experimenting with techniques. Unlike my hair that is depressingly natural in color, my web page doesn't have to be. Enjoy the eye candy. |
