snow dudes 01/31/2012
Near-record-setting temps for a January day in Minnesota forces us outside into the slush. Slush can only be good for one thing...a very heavy snowman! At some point involving all four members of our household (plus one curious dog), we managed to erect a 6+' dude of snow. My littlest man is thrilled, and hopefully the sun will stay away long enough for a couple days worth of enjoyment! Add Comment preview 01/12/2012
"Your ceiling is your fifth wall." I remember reading that in a magazine once. Last weekend I remember telling Jahred, "I hate this vaulted ceiling. It's dead. I need to hang something from it, like...a canoe." Jahred - "I saw a canoe. In the county park the other day. Well, only half a canoe. It was in the burn pile." Me - "And you're just now telling me this? Axel, get in the car!!" We pulled up to a grim sight – a canoe so ugly only a vaulted-ceiling-hater could love it. We crammed it into the van and took it home. While the details I will photograph in the natural light of day, here is a preview of where that broken vessel ended up. just hatched 06/27/2011
Just one quick thing to share. When the girls (college friends) came to my house on Saturday, it was all weddings, babies and . . . well . . . nature. These darlings are brand new to the world and living right under my deck. Lucky mommy I am! What the flower? 03/10/2011
So I've got a weed to pick with a local florist. Last Valentine's day, Jahred surprised me with flowers...truly a surprise (applause here). Although I'm not the typical "flowers and chocolate" gal, I'm also not the "drab apartment for a year" kind of gal. He really had few options this year; the flowers were a welcome edition. So I took their picture. As the week passed, so did many of the blooms. I weened them down until only a sprig of green and two Calla Lilly remained. When we left two weeks ago for Florida, they still looked lively so I left them where they stood. Walking in the door Tuesday night, I was shocked to see that my flowers were still living?! I had expected Jahred to dispose of their rotting selves at least a week ago. So, yesterday I continued to enjoy them when a sneaky though came to mind...what if these aren't REAL? Asking Jahred for his opinion, he removed one Lilly from the water filled vase and twisted the stem into a perfect corkscrew...and it stayed. OMG, they're FAKE! Ok, maybe it's just me...in the dark about mixing live and artificial flowers in arrangements? Needless to say, they're still pretty and remain right were they were...hmmmmm....makes you think. five stars 02/06/2011
It's been a while since I've seen a toy with as many multi-generational applications as the "Crayola Glow Station." Using a Christmas gift card last night, Axel picked this baby out at Michaels and I was quite pleased. WOW, how addicting is this! Slightly larger than an etch-a-sketch and perfect size for riding in the car, simply step into a dark room, illuminate the wand and you're ready to draw. The board comes with a few stencils, but literally ANYTHING can leave a glowing shadow. Axel had such a blast tracing Woody, Jesse and Lightening McQueen...just to name a few. Jahred took the toy for a trial (thank you Elizabeth for catching this typo...formerly "trail") run in the bathroom this morning and was equally impressed! He suggested that film negatives would look AWESOME, brought to life in neon. Transparencies with written words or pictures work really well, and of course you can draw free hand. Eventually the ghostly images fade and it's ever-so-enticing to see what you can light up next. Best thing about this toy...not many parts, stores flat or stacked with books and it's NOT MESSY! Ok, if you are a kid of ANY age...I highly recommend this for some serious "winter darkness" relief! what i've been reading...the short list 01/20/2011
You know you're a stay at home mom when your "to read" list can seem overwhelming. You strategize a way to pack in your "words per day," to keep your mind fresh, to check books off your "life reading list" and to most importantly feel connected with the world. I have really scored big lately on the book front (meaning everything I pick up feels like gold to the last page); reading both "trendy" and of course, my favorite, non-fiction. Here are a few I recommend for 2011. ...nothing like the classics. A haunting tale of life and death. Follow this up with... If you're not in the mood to get the creeps, but are slightly curious as to the inner workings of circus life, I recommend... My personal favorite, non-fiction, read by me in 2010...(Jeannette's other best-seller "Glass Castle" is wonderful as well)... ...and because I have re-discovered my LOVE of 10th grade writing exercises, this book has given me something to write about...not that its going anywhere...literally, Ms. Goldberg pushes your envelope with mind exercises! There you have it, my last couple months worth of reading. I've squeezed in the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" series, along with "Great Expectations" and a few others that weren't as remarkable. Currently on my Nook is "A New Earth," by Eckhart Tolle. I wasn't quite ready for it when Oprah jumped on the band-wagon a few years ago, but an older and wiser me is ready to slow down for a soul-searching (rather ego abolishing) read. Are you KIDDING me? 10/27/2010
![]() While shamelessly shopping at Walmart for the Poly-Fill stuffing I regularly use, I happen to come across one of the most disturbing pieces of merchandise. For just $5 (which is about the amount of change found under the car seats of a pervert) you can purchase something to lure children to your car. Is the old "hey kid, would you like some candy" not working anymore? Is it necessary to roll out the black and orange carpet and entice children with banners, ghosts and the "6ft of hanging decoration"? I really can't say this enough...ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I was so shocked to see this piece of trash that I took a picture (despite the odd looks from the cashier). Really, nothing says Walmart like making an extra 5 while compromising morals. Does the name Jacob Wetterling mean nothing to these people? So, this year, while taking your kids out on the town, it's not so much the treats you need to worry about, it's the man turning tricks from the back of his Prius. two marathons 10/25/2010
This weekend was filled with hard work and great rewards. On Saturday, Jahred ran the first ever Mankato Marathon. With time not on our side this year, he had little free time to train, but came in for a strong finish of 4:00 (four hours even). I was his only spectator and I have to say, that was some boring terrain. Hopefully next year they can spice up the course with some river views...anything other than 26.2 miles of waving corn fields. Really though, it was a great event. Best of all, as Jahred crossed mile 5, I got word of another long awaited marathon being run...the marathon only a mother can compete in! Beautiful Baby Nora was born into our family this weekend and I was lucky enough to meet her on Sunday. I cannot wait to get both Nora and Axel together for some long awaited cousin time! photoshop 09/22/2010
Up until now I have been a believer in raw photography...now I believe in photoshop. Tyler, my brother asked me to take his senior pictures this year...yes, I still have a brother in high school, and I was honored to capture his grown-up self this past weekend. Feeling that the time was right, and I personally have liked myself in fewer photographs lately, Jahred and I invested in youth/software that is cheaper than botox. Because I'm not yet a pro, I am experimenting with different effects to see exactly how far I'm willing to go. I do think I'll keep my photos honest, but playing with the colors is oh so much fun! Because this is Tyler's last "first day of school" I thought I would include Axels first "first day of school." A big year for both of them. Axels first day of pre-school, only the red eyes were removed. Andy (the middle brother in our family) turns 24, Axel decorated two cakes with candles. Some color work was done on this photo. Tyler's senior pic. Selective coloring on this photo. This could get addicting! In Print 08/20/2010
![]() I'm actually speechless when it comes to a major project that I've just completed. Having mentioned to many people that my grandfather was the original scrap-booker, now, publicly in print is a 166 page book of his collection! After a summer of scanning, editing and having a little faith, I have published his collection through Blurb into an 11x13 semi-chronological book (can be found under search: Richard Ruedy). The outcome is stunning, the publishing is beautiful, and the image quality is spot-on! I honestly cannot believe how it looks in print. Wishing he were alive to see his treasured collection preserved forever in the pages of history, I can only imagine the stories he would tell about the articles, pictures and captions he placed on each page. I know it was his hand guiding me on late nights of formating, re-formating and making final editorial decisions. In the end, the book is more or less exactly how he scrap-booked it, and exactly how he would have wanted it. Perhaps the most compelling part of the book is the final third. This part of the book came from a separate album that he held of Memorials. Clipping each obituary from the paper, he honored and preserved every fallen member of the Saint Paul Police, retired, killed in the line of duty, family members of Police Officers, and it was clear how much he cherished each and every friend on the force. Yesterday the book was officially presented to the Saint Paul Police Historical Society. Nana brought us all together at their monthly meeting and she generously donated a copy of the book. What's even more wonderful is that on Blurb, the book will always be available in their bookstore and people can order them for gifts, as memorials and to leave to their own children. For any Minnesota, Saint Paul, Police or history collector, it covers a remarkable time in history. With gratitude for all the circumstances surrounding this year, truly the gift of free-time has been my blessing. Feel free to "preview" the book through the Blurb website. If ever you are interested in creating a similar book, I would be more than happy to throw a few pointers your way! | Oldies but Goodies
